What to do if your fuel is being stolen right now

Fuel theft is an ongoing issue in this country, and one that many businesses unfortunately have to deal with, particularly during times of national economic hardship. Rates of fuel theft increase during these periods, so if you’ve found yourself in a position where your fuel is being stolen from your vehicle right at this moment, then try your best not to panic. Here’s our advice.

What to do if you spot a fuel theft in progress

If you witness a theft, you must never approach the thief, as this could potentially place you in significant danger. Here’s our list of the things that you should prioritise if you spot a fuel thief.

  • First and foremost, call 999 and report the theft.

  • If possible, try to record the act so it can be used as evidence, but only attempt this if you’re absolutely certain that you won’t be seen by the perpetrator.

  • Once the police have arrived, make a note of the crime number for future reference.

  • Call your fleet manager and inform them of the theft.

  • Install extra safety measures to reduce the risk of theft happening in the future.

There are a variety of methods that you can deploy to help reduce the likelihood of fuel being stolen from your vehicle. Whether they’re parked up in a compound, or out on a job, we’re here with some guidance here at Tanksafe

Install preventative measures

It’s true what they say, prevention is far better than cure, and this age old saying is just as applicable to fuel theft as it is to any other context. There are a multitude of options when it comes to security measures you can consider for your vehicle compound, such as CCTV, security lighting and alarm systems. However, when you’re out on a job, and it’s just you and your vehicle, there’s only really one option…

Tanksafe Optimum

Most basic anti-siphons are generally made with quantity rather than quality in mind, which means that a lot of them share the same common flaws. Unfortunately, even one of those flaws can be more than enough to make them almost entirely useless.
