5 Random But Riveting Facts…
Invention of the sandwich
The sandwich may have originated in 1762 when it’s said that John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich became hungry during a gambling game.
So as not to interrupt his play he ordered some meat to be served between slices of bread.
It’s thought that some people started ordering “the same as Sandwich”, and the name stuck.
2. Pringles
Whilst working at Procter & Gamble in the 60s, Fredric John Baur, an American organic chemist and food storage scientist, invented a “chip can” for the company’s new brand, “Pringles”.
It was the perfect container for the curved crisps, and Baur received a patent for its design in 1971.
Following Baur’s death in 2008, his children honoured his request for some of his ashes to be buried in a Pringles can.
And so they were, in an original flavour version.
3. “Back Rub”
Sergey Brin and Larry Page, founders of Google, originally named their new search engine, “Back Rub”, as their system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a website.
Eventually, they changed the name to “Google”, which was a play on the word, “googol”. ”Googol” is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.
The word was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.
